On this day, May 21, 1799, one of the pioneers of paleontology was born in England: Mary Anning.
Although she became a celebrity in her field, she was not given the recognition she deserved during her lifetime, as was the case with so many other women throughout history.
In 2010 she was recognized by the Royal Society as one of the ten most influential women scientists in British history.
